HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville's school system is declaring its furniture and school supply flea market a big-bucks success.

Thursday night, school asset managers announced the district has saved $550,000 with its program to stash surplus supplies in the empty Stone Middle School.

Since the beginning of the year, the district has taken unused furniture, bookshelves, sports gear and other equipment scattered around the system and used Stone as a central re-use warehouse, where administrators could find it without having to pay up for new gear.

Asset Management Coordinator Lontrell Harris said moving all the items to a central location saves schools in the system time in finding needed items as well as money.

Planners had expected the savings from the project would be a one-time deal as surplus desks or equipment were moved from where they weren't needed and then taken to where they were.

However, the needs of each school have changed from year to year, so the process has turned into an ongoing service to fill those needs.
