HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A vehicle is one of the more expensive purchases many people might make. Sometimes, purchasing a used vehicle can be a little tricky – but if you have a warranty, you have an extra layer of protection.
One Russellville mother said her problems began once that warranty expired.
Caressa Fretwell purchased her 2009 Buick Enclave in March of this year. It came with a five-year, 100,000 mile warranty which expired in September. The following month, Caressa said she started having problems with her transmission.
"We'd taken a trip to Birmingham. We were parked on a little incline, it was raining, and we went to put it in reverse and it started jumping. I thought it was because of the wet, but then we were flat and I tried it again. It did the same thing," Fretwell said.
Caressa Googled the issue and found numerous problems with the Enclave, especially the transmission issue she was having. The following week when she returned home, Caressa contacted Buick to report the problem and ask if there were any recalls on the vehicle.
"They said there were no recalls and usually they only did recalls for safety issues," she said.
She was told her transmission issue didn't qualify as a safety issue, meaning she would have to pay out of pocket to have it repaired.
While researching her vehicle's problem, Caressa said she also discovered the Enclave had a recall for a water pump issue. She thought it was curious there would be a recall for that, but not a transmission problem.
"They said the water pump could damage the engine," she said.
We contacted Buick and explained Caressa's problem. They chose to fix the transmission issue she was having with her vehicle, even though technically her vehicle is out-of-warranty.
Caressa said she is happy we stepped in.
"I am very happy that 48 stepped in, because when I called them (Buick), they weren't willing to work with me, but when 48 contacted them they were very willing to help.
Now, when she and her family buckle up for their drive, they can have the security of knowing their vehicle is safe.
