Teacher recovering after being hit by bus

SPRINGFIELD, TN (WSMV) -

In classroom 209 at Springfield Middle School, fractions and division are common speak, but Mary Slow will not use those terms with her seventh-graders anytime soon. Instead, she's in the hospital recovering from a crash.

"She said, 'Well, I'm very concerned.' I said, 'What are you concerned about?' She said, 'I'm concerned that my scholars are not going to be able to learn how to divide fractions without me tomorrow," Principal Grant Bell said.

Bell says Slow had stayed late to tutor students and was headed to her car when she was hit by a district bus Tuesday night.

"It was an accident. Where she stepped in front, I know the bus driver did not see her. He was extremely upset about what had happened," Bell said.

At the time, 20 students were onboard. Police say the bus driver, Patrick Pendleton, had picked up students from an after-school program. None were hurt.

"The driver took his eyes off the road to look back and he failed to yield to the lady," said Lt. William Watkins with the Springfield Police Department.

Officers and district transportation officials recreated the crash. The supervisor of transportation says the goal is to improve safety.

At the school, the focus of more than 600 students remains on Slow and her recovery.

"The students were wonderful; they immediately wanted to start writing letters to her," Bell said.

Bell says they hope Slow will return to the classroom after Christmas break. She's in stable condition.

Police have cited Pendleton with two misdemeanor traffic violations.
