To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A South Huntsville family is grateful their dog kept a burglar out of their home.

Raylen is an 18-month-old black Labrador who made it a point to keep his family safe. Raylen charged at a person who tried breaking into the home of Kathy Smith and her family.

Daughter Kennedy was watching TV when the dog started barking.

"I was telling him to be quiet because I didn't think anything about it. Then all of a sudden the door opens and he ran out charging. I saw a black figure and I immediately went in and got my mom," Kennedy said.

"All of a sudden I hear the door chime. Kennedy came running into the bedroom and screaming someone's in the house," said Kathy.

The family was unharmed during those chaotic moments. Kathy said having such an invasion of privacy with children in the home is a parent's worst nightmare.

But the family has nothing but nice things to say about their hero dog. The burglar fled, obviously afraid that the dog's bite would be worse than his bark.
