Teenage girl dies in car surfing stunt in Walmart parking lot

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A dangerous stunt turned deadly for a Salem teenager over the weekend.

Police said a group of teenagers were "car surfing" at the Walmart parking lot on Commercial Street SE late Friday night.

Several of them were sitting on the trunk of a newer-model Nissan sedan while another teen was behind the wheel.

Two teens fell off the car during the stunt, and 17-year-old Marisol Quesada died from her injuries.

The other person injured, a 16-year-old girl, suffered no life-threatening injuries and is recovering at a local hospital.

The driver was not hurt.

Quesada was a student at North Salem High School, where students are planning a candlelight vigil to honor her.

"It's hard for all of us," said Emma Uribe, who played on the JV soccer team with Quesada. "We just can't believe that she's gone, that she left us."

Teammates describe Quesada as a fierce player, who was very friendly.

"Marisol was an amazing person," said Jazmin Uribe. "She always made our day bright by smiling, making us laugh."

"She would mess around, tell you to keep pushing and stuff," said Grace Haburn. "It was really great to know her."

Principal Cynthia Richardson said Quesda was doing well in her classes, after participating in a credit-recovery program last year.

"I think she was really letting kids know that they too could turn themselves around and be successful," said Richardson.

Richardson hopes students will learn from the accident.

"What we want students to get from this whole situation is you have to be safe," she said. "Cars are not anything to play with and they need to make good decisions and yes, young people can die, too."

Police have not released the name of the other teen who was injured or anyone else who was involved.

They've made no arrests and have forwarded the case to the district attorney's office to consider charges.

A spokesman with the Salem-Keizer School District said counselors will be on hand to help students who are struggling with the loss of their classmate.

A candlelight vigil will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the high school's flagpole.

School officials are in the process of setting up a fund to help with funeral expenses. For more information, contact Jacqueline Benavides at 503-399-3241.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
