HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Veterans Day is just one week away, and a solemn tradition is underway in Huntsville.

Volunteers are assembling thousands of memorial wreaths that will be placed on graves around Madison County. This group is hoping to make about 3,500 of the 9,000 wreaths this year.

The president of the group Wreaths for Veterans said the mission has personal meaning.

"We're doing it to honor and remember our veterans. I do have a husband that is buried at Arlington Cemetery. Jennifer sent me a picture of a wreath and said I wish we could do this in Huntsville. I said we can! We will! We're military wives," said Joy Parker.

The group will continue putting the wreaths together Tuesday and start putting them across Madison County later this week.
