MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

After just one term, a state representative from Marshall County announced Monday he will not seek re-election.

Republican Wes Long cited family reasons as the motivation for his announcement. Long has a wife and two very young children at home.

After toppling a longtime Democrat for the office three years ago, Long announced Monday afternoon he will vacate the office after his term ends. His election helped Republicans take over the state legislature in 2010.

Since taking office, Long's district has also changed. Parts of Blount and DeKalb Counties are now there after state redistricting.

Long said he's accomplished everything he campaigned on, but felt it best to go out on top. He said his family comes first.

"One of them just turned seven. The next one turns five next week. As a Republican and a conservative, I think I would be cheating them and my family by taking time away from them," said Long.

Long made it clear he was not resigning and will complete his term, which has one more year.
