ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Athens Utilities wants to ease customer fears about an email from last week that caused 'red-flags' to go up concerning a possible scam.

Friday afternoon, the company began receiving phone calls about a suspicious email several customers encountered. Out of precaution, Athens Utilities warned the public about the content of the email and asked people not to click on any links within them while they researched the message.

Monday, officials announced the email was inadvertently sent out to Athens Utilities customers by an outside contractor the utility provider had done business with. The email presented no threat to computers or personal information, officials said.

Athens Utilities said in a statement they were taking steps to prevent a similar incident from happening again in the future.
