HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The president of the Huntsville City School Board plans to challenge the current incumbent in the next State Senate race.

David Blair formally announced his candidacy for Alabama State Senate Tuesday. Blair will challenge current incumbent Paul Sanford in the Republican Primaries in June.

Blair served on the Huntsville City School Board from 2000-2004 and was re-elected in 2010. He is currently President of the Board.

The decision did not surprise a lot of people, following Topper Birney's retirement announcement and Jennie Robinson's decision to run for city council. The board could wind up with three brand-new members.

Blair was asked where Huntsville's school board goes from here. He responded that the amount of positive momentum they're finally having will only help any newly-elected board member.

"We've been able to do so many good things with the Huntsville City Schools, from finances to academics," Blair said.

No one has currently entered their name for consideration for the openings on the school board. Candidates have until July 2014 to qualify for the ballot.
