MOULTON, AL (WAFF) -

Bullets found inside Lawrence County High School forced a lockdown while deputies searched the campus Monday.

Officials did not find any additional ammunition or weapons inside the school. They think the bullets fell out of someone's pocket, leftover from a weekend hunting trip.

Just after 8 a.m., school officials found two live rounds of .22-caliber bullets in a hallway. Deputies and school officials spent the next two and a half hours searching the campus, examining everything including lockers, classrooms and bags - looking for additional ammo or a weapon.

"We've had these things happen before. We thought it might just hunters that had dropped their bullets; that has happened before and they normally report that to us, but because we didn't know for certain and because nobody owned up to them, we put the school on lockdown," said Superintendent Heath Grimes.

Grimes addressed the issue with students, telling them owning up to accidentally bringing the ammunition on campus is better than saying nothing at all.

"We talked to them about making sure they understood that if by accident they brought something like that on campus, if they bring it to our attention it's not a problem. But if we end up finding it then we will press charges," he said.

Parents received a mass electronic message shortly after the lockdown began. Some believed this incident was too much of a 'close one' - no matter the outcome of the situation, some parents felt their kids would be safer at home with them than at school.

"It's very concerning with all the young kids. I mean, 18 years old, you can get a license to carry a weapon now. That's crazy and uncalled for. Anything can happen at any time," said concerned parent John Haggard.

The lockdown was officially lifted at 10:30 a.m., and the rest of the day ran as scheduled.
