HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Oakwood University's Department of History and Political Science will host "An Evening with Deputy Keith Reed."

Reed is a Deputy with the Madison County Sheriff's office and is the Executive Officer of Operation Make a Difference.  The event is the first ever bullying seminar for the organization.

Reed said that bullying is a big problem not just in the schools, but in colleges and some workplaces. The seminar is meant to address the subject and offer people of all ages an outlet and help if you are the bully or if you are being bullied.

"It's okay that if you are being bullied to go and talk to somebody and let someone know what is going on. You can let somebody know so that it can be addressed and so that it can be dealt with. If you don't talk about it, it will continue," said Reed.

Donna Clark is the Guidance Services Coordinator with Huntsville City Schools. She says that bullying is in every school, everywhere, and it's not always an easy thing for students to discuss.

"Some students are still fearful of being labeled a snitch or tattletale. I think students report and talk to counselors about bullying, but not enough and not the kids that we want to talk to us about it," said Clark.

She said counselors in the school system are working to be proactive to crack down on bullying and let students know that they can help.  She said the schools are involved with the "No Place for Hate" program and they are working to have a district wide anonymous bully reporting program.

Deputy Reed will focus on the dangers of bullying in this free program. The event will start at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 in the auditorium of the McKee Business and Technology Complex.

This event is open to the public.
