HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The University of Alabama in Huntsville College of Nursing will hold their highly acclaimed disaster simulation event on Nov. 7.

This year's disaster simulation will feature the special effects makeup and props expertise of Michele Mulkey of FX Studio. The UAH Theatre Program, under the direction of associate professor of Communication Arts David Harwell, will also participate in this simulation, along with nursing students from Oakwood University, UAH campus police and several community first responders.

Dr. Marlena Primeau, the event coordinator and clinical assistant professor of nursing at UAH, said that the simulation "gives our senior nursing students the opportunity to experience nursing care during a mass-casualty event while reviewing core nursing concepts across the lifespan."

Preparations for the simulation at Charger Hospital in Wilson Hall will start at 6 a.m. on Nov. 7. Meanwhile, Mulkey will prepare moulage (makeup), casting and molding for numerous mock natural disaster injuries. The simulation will start at 9 a.m., and an event debriefing will take place at 11:30 a.m.

"Mulkey will conduct a Moulage Workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 6, for members of the UAH Theatre Program and College of Nursing," Dr. Primeau said. "She will assist trainees with moulage and prosthetics at the workshop and during the disaster simulation itself."

UAH's disaster simulation was started nearly ten years ago. New features of this year's simulation include usage of the nationally standardized Incident Command System, including standard FEMA and Homeland Security forms, the collaborative study of the impact of increased authenticity on simulation learning outcomes, made possible by the UAH Cross-College Faculty Research grant awarded to Dr. Primeau and Harwell, and the involvement of Mulkey to increase authenticity in the simulation.
