HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison-Morgan County STAC Team is working to crack down on drug trafficking through the U.S. Postal Service.

During a week-long operation, drug agents worked with postal inspectors from Birmingham to seize 87 pounds of high-grade marijuana with a street value of $776,000 that was sent through the mail. The packages were being sent to residents in Huntsville and the surrounding areas.

Drug agents were able to trace who the packages were going to and arrest 11 people. Depending on the amount of marijuana seized, some were charged with drug trafficking, while others were charged with felony possession of marijuana.

Huntsville Police publicly announced three of those arrests Nov. 5. Charlotte Schoder, Clifton Tatum, and Justen Robinson were all charged with trafficking.

While making those arrests, drug agents seized a number of handguns and rifles, as well as cash.

Investigators said the majority of the packages were being sent from California. They contained various amounts of marijuana and weighed anywhere from one pound to 15 pounds. The STAC team is working with authorities in other states to track down where the packages originated.

Drug agents determined this method of trafficking drugs is being commonly used in our area.

"We could do this every day of the week and it would result in these kinds of numbers. We are planning on working more frequently with the Postal Service to continue this effort," said Team Commander Sergeant Jerry King.

King said getting these drugs and guns off the streets and making these arrests will help cut back on the violent crime and murder rates that have recently spiked in the Metro area.
