HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A hangar on Redstone Arsenal now sits in a new spot on the airfield. At around 180,000 pounds and 20,000 square feet, it wasn't an easy move.
Since 2005, the clamshell hangar sat on the east side of the arsenal's airfield. Last week, it was slowly moved to the west side to be closer to the hub of operations. When the hangar was delivered eight years ago, that side of the airfield was just an empty space. Now that the majority of the work to helicopters is done on the west side, it only made sense to bring the hangar closer.
The hangar is used to maintain helicopters, like Chinooks and Black Hawks. The hangar provides coverage for mechanics to work on the aircraft. It also provides aircraft with protection from severe weather. This hangar survived the April 27th storms.
The move comes at a cost savings to tax payers. A new hangar costs around $600,000. This one will get a few new parts that come at a fraction of the price. It will also cut down on wasted time now that crews don't have to shuttle across the airfield to work on equipment. The new location is also further back from the landing strip, which provides an increase in safety.
Arsenal officials close to the project say they hope to keep this hangar until 2019, when they estimate they will have the funds for a new one.
