Police say crooks are tampering with ATMs trying to steal your money.

Investigators said they're putting tape into the ATMs cash slot, then when the machine goes to give you your money it doesn't come. In theory making it seem like a machine issue, but as soon as you pull away the crooks come back and remove the tape with your cash attached.

A number of the cases have been reported in the Muscle Shoals area and at least one case has been reported at the First Metro Bank in Tuscumbia. Police say those responsible can face a list of charges including criminal tampering and criminal mischief.

Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan wants community members to be aware of what's going on. He's concerned the crimes could escalate.

"Two things are really important, one is the fact that obviously they're staying there (in the area) observing the ATM. This also means as you approach the ATM to withdraw funds, there's a risk of someone coming up and committing some other type of persons crime. The other part of it is, they're actually tampering with a device that dispenses money from our banks", said Logan

Police suspect if there's no message on the ATM about not dispensing your money, then you're likely a victim. At that point they say get back into your car or pull forward, lock your doors, and call police.
