MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) -

The Muscle Shoals City School District is under fire after someone filed a complaint with the state's ethics commission, accusing them of giving their high school football coaches illegal bonuses.

The letter the ethics commission sent to the school board says the board failed to follow proper procedure when giving out the bonuses, calling it a procedural oversight.

Interim Superintendent Billy Hudson said this all started last fall, when the boosters wanted to give money to coaches following their successful season. The money was put into the board's account and paid with the approval of the former superintendent.

The ethics commission said that move needed to be approved by the entire board and issued the district a warning letter. No further action will take place against the district, but the letter will remain on file.

"The only problem was it should have been approved before, and as the ethics letter said, it was a procedural oversight. When you are found guilty of something usually there is a punishment and here, (they) did not give out any punishment because it did not say they were guilty of any crime," said Hudson.
