BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police confiscated nine duffel bags full of marijuana during a traffic stop Tuesday morning. Police seized 490 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $490,000.

The traffic stop happened on I-20/59 and Sgt. Johnny Williams says this is the largest bust the department has made in some time.

"We may get a small amount someone using for personal use..this is very significant due to the amount confiscated," he said.

Williams said an 18 wheeler made an illegal lane change near the airport on I-20/59. Police pulled the vehicle over and questioned a male driver who seemed nervous.

"The person was very open with the officers, cooperated very well," Williams said.

Officers searched the truck and found a shipment of squash and the 9 duffel bags in plain view.

"We've actually confiscated drugs before on the interstate but usually we dont get to this magnitude," Williams said.

Williams said the truck's log showed the driver was delivering the squash to Maine. It's unclear if the drugs were being dropped in Birmingham or elsewhere along the way.

"We don't know because we basically cuaght him in the center of the city. It could of been going to the streets of Birmingham...luckily we got it off streets no matter which city is was going to," Williams said.

Police say they will release more information about the suspect once he's formally charged. As for the squash, officers are trying to contact the company that expected to receive the shipment.
