The definition of transparency according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is "able to be seen through; easy to notice or understand; honest and open, not secretive."
Transparency is what Governor Bentley promised all Alabamians concerning the investigation into and subsequent information derived from the ASU forensic audit and to date, he has delivered with the public release of the preliminary audit and the open ASU Board of Trustee meeting this week.
You may ask, "Why should I care… it does not concern me what happens at ASU?" Well, we all need to care as we are all taxpayers. Between ASU and the Governor's office – we taxpayers have paid for a $650,000 forensic audit, a Presidential buy out and ASU attorney fees - totaling a million-plus and counting. Honestly, money the state and university could be dedicating to other projects.
WSFA 12 News made the conscience decision yesterday to disrupt normally scheduled programming from 330pm until after 6pm to bring you almost 3 hours of wall to wall, uninterrupted coverage of the ASU Board of Trustee meeting called by the Governor. The decision was not made without serious consideration of the financial and viewer disruption issues, but that was tempered with the fact that our role at this news stations is to always be that "window" into every important story that impacts you.
WSFA 12 News is committed to leveraging every avenue at our disposal whether it's on air, online or on your phone to allow for total transparency with this and every important story and we will commit to always be a beacon of accountability for this community. That's our promise.
