Guntersville to re-examine entertainment district proposal

The new proposal includes a three-day schedule for the new district. The new proposal includes a three-day schedule for the new district.

An entertainment district is back on the table for the Guntersville City Council as the proposed ordinance was re-introduced during Monday night's council meeting.

The council voted down the original ordinance back in August by just one vote. The council then amended the proposal for re-introduction. The amended ordinance includes just three days in which the district would operate. The proposal would include Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 2:30 to 10 p.m.

The mayor feels it will be a big draw to the downtown area if passed. She said it's the public that has prompted the council to take another look at considering its passage.

"We had a group of citizens come back and ask us to reconsider. I've had a lot of people call; every time I see them on the street, they're like 'would you please reconsider.' I have had a significant number of people ask me to reconsider," said Mayor Leigh Dollar.

Mayor Dollar said the proposal is an economic issue, not a morals issue. She said one city block is under consideration for removal.

"The sheriff's department - we're looking at taking that out. Right now it is included, but I'm going to have a conversation with the sheriff tomorrow, and we will get his thoughts on that," she said.

A public comment period is expected at next week's city council meeting before the vote.
