To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Redstone Arsenal officials gave an update on a mold problem at their Mills Road Child Development Center Friday.

Team Redstone said analysis shows the presence of three species of mold. Work to get the mold out of the building began Friday night.

The three types of mold found inside the building are Chaetomium, Cladosporium and Stachybotrys.

According to officials, since the mold was encapsulated within wall cavities and not subject to air movement or direct contact with people, students and workers were shielded from exposure.

Children will be rotated to other rooms during the abatement process so they aren't exposed to residue during cleaning. The mold abatement process could take up to seven weeks. Officials said it's always better to be safe than sorry.

"You want to try to ensure the safest environment possible. Let's not be in reaction mode; let's prevent and try to see if we can be in a situation where we don't have an outbreak or something becomes visible," said Colonel Bill Marks.

One mom said she feels her child is safe and appreciates the arsenal's transparency. "I'm really happy with what they've done. They let us know since day one, given out letters back in August when they first found the issue," said Missy Bray.

Officials said even as the mold stands presently, it poses little to no threat to people in the room. However, those with compromised immune systems have the biggest risk of having some kind of allergic reaction.

If parents who are concerned about children experiencing symptoms related to mold exposure should contact their primary healthcare provider.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 4th, Preschool Room 8 (3-4 year olds) will need to be dropped off and picked up at School Age Services located on Vincent Road (Building 3155) in the vicinity of Gate 8 until further notice for the first round of rotations.

Daycare hours and other operations will continue as normal throughout the cleanup period.
