COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Two men charged in a deadly home invasion in Sheffield, appeared in court Thursday morning.

Damien Shipley pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness or defect in connection with the shooting death of Dorian Hamilton.

LaDante Montgomery, also charged in the murder, filed for youthful offender status.

Investigators said 27-year-old Hamilton of Muscle Shoals was visiting a home on Sterling Boulevard when two men broke in. Hamilton tried to keep them from entering a back room where he and five others were when he was shot.

A third man, Fernando King, was also arrested and charged in the fatal home invasion.

Shipley was asked if he had anything to say as he was escorted back to the Colbert County Jail after the hearing. He shook his head no. A few feet away, he was observed smiling and talking with the man next to him - Montgomery.
