Victim killed in Wednesday I-85 crash identified

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Police Department is releasing the name of the victim killed in Wednesday's 2-vehicle crash along Interstate 85.

Authorities says 53-year-old Mobile resident Robert Walker was driving a 1994 Pontiac Grand-Am when it collided with a 2011 Nissan Armada in the southbound lanes of I-85 between Perry Hill Road and Ann Street.

Walker was transported to Baptist Medical Center South where he was later pronounced dead. There were no other occupants in his vehicle.

Authorities say there were 3 people inside the Nissan and each was transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

An initial investigation shows that shortly after noon, Walker's car, which was traveling north, crossed over the median, entered the southbound lanes of traffic and collided with the Nissan. It wasn't immediately known why Walker crossed the median.

One eyewitness told WSFA 12 News they saw Walker's car start weaving before it swerved and hit a construction barrel, then swerved back before crossing the median and slamming into the SUV.

All lanes of Interstate 85 southbound, as well as a northbound lane, were closed for approximately 3 hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Walker is Montgomery's 17th traffic fatality victim of 2013.
