MPD charges former officer with criminal trespass

Posted: Updated:

The Montgomery Police Department says it has charged a former officer with first-degree criminal trespass in connection with an ongoing investigation.

MPD arrested Destin Ryals on the misdemeanor charge Tuesday evening, Oct. 22.

Ryals, 21, was taken into custody at his Prattville home with the assistance of the Prattville Police Department.

MPD initiated the investigation Monday, Oct. 21, after receiving a citizen complaint that a police officer had used his position to unlawfully enter a local residence. In the course of the investigation, MPD identified Ryals as the subject of the complaint. The department says it immediately relieved him of duty and initiated termination proceedings. Ryals subsequently resigned Monday, Oct. 21, effective immediately.

The investigation indicates that Ryals entered the home under false pretenses after the resident opened the door to the officer. As part of its investigation, MPD is reviewing all citizen contacts involving the officer during his six months of patrol duty with the department.

Ryals was hired in June 2012, graduated from the police academy in November 2012, and completed on-the-job training in April 2013.

The investigation is continuing, and no additional information is available for release at this time, the police department said.
