FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

What better way to learn about government than from state leaders themselves? Lawmakers spent Tuesday inside area schools meeting with students and teachers.

Senator Robert Bedford visited some Colbert County schools as part of the state's ‘Learning with Legislators' day. Sen. Bedford spent the morning with the students and staff at Wilson Elementary School.

While he was there, Sen. Bedford also presented the school with a $600 donation towards the fifth-grade trip to go to Camp McDowell in Winston County.

He said events such as Tuesday's give lawmakers a greater appreciation for Alabama schools.

"I'm very disappointed in the Republican supermajority for continually attacking public education, wanting to go to charter schools and vouchers and things that take away from the excellence that we need in our classroom. Our teachers are doing a good job; we need to support them in Montgomery," said Bedford.

Sen. Bedford said he would like to see more support for teachers at the state level before making a digital switch within school districts across the state.
