LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Lawrence County Commission is slashing the pay for the county's Emergency Management Agency director. Meanwhile, the woman who was in charge of the EMA is off the job.

The commission's attorney said Interim Director Brenda Morgan has been on paid administrative leave for two weeks, and that there is an investigation. He said he could only reveal that much because it is an ongoing personnel issue.

Hillard Frost served as Lawrence Co. EMA Director for 25 years. He earned nearly $70,000 a year by the time he retired at the end of July. Tuesday, the county commission voted to lower the annual salary for that position to $41,000 per year. The commissioners in favor of the salary reduction said the former director had received raises through TVA funding, and they are getting that number down to what it should be for a new director.

"We needed to get this back in line with the other TVA counties around us that get that supplement, that is supposed to be added to the inside of their benefit package or their pay, not added on top of it," said Commissioner Joey Hargrove.

The commissioners also discussed lowering the Deputy Director's salary, but tabled the issue until the investigation is over.
