BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Councilwoman Maxine Parker has been elected as the new Birmingham City Council president.

The announcement was made at a swearing-in ceremony for the Birmingham City Council held Tuesday morning.

Parker is considered a "middle of the road" councilor who is fiercely protective of her district, especially environmental issues.

Jay Roberson was also elected as president pro-tem. Many believed that Johnathan Austin and Steven Hoyt were vying for the president's seat, but Parker apparently threw her name in at the last minute.

Tuesday morning Mayor William Bell and all nine city council members were sworn in by various judges. The only new council member, Marcus Lundy, was sworn in for a term as the councilor for District 9.

Mayor William Bell congratulated both Roberson and Parker and promised to keep an open door. The newly elected officials could signal a warmer mayor/council relationship than in the past.

In his address at the ceremony, Mayor Bell said they will work together to build a better future for the city in the next four years.

"Change doesn't come overnight, change comes from methodical planning, hard work, and effort and we have done the planning and we have done the work and you will see changes in your neighborhood and changes in your community," Mayor Bell said.
