MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

An atheist group said they will sue if they don't hear back from the mayor of Montgomery or the city's police chief. The group is planning to sue over a police program involving clergy.

American Atheists based out of New Jersey, filed a complaint with the Montgomery Police Department saying that the department's "Operation Good Shepard" is unconstitutional.

The program brings in volunteer pastors to violent crime scenes in the city in case someone needs talk to someone.

In a letter to Montgomery's mayor and police chief, the group demanded that the program stop, or allow an atheist to participate.

So far, the city hasn't said anything and the group said they will sue if they don't get a response soon.

The Decatur Police Department has a similar volunteer chaplain program. They have not received a notice from the atheist group.
