MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

State health and law enforcement officials are asking that the public get rid of potentially dangerous prescription drugs that are expired, unused, or unwanted.

They are working with police and sheriffs' departments in many towns to set up drop off points for "Prescription Drug Take-Back Day", which will take place on Saturday, October 26. Officials say the program is free and anonymous.

Attorney General Luther Strange says getting rid of potentially dangerous controlled substances is an important step in fighting drug abuse and drug-related crimes. Officials also say using the drop off points is much safer than throwing the unused prescriptions in the trash or flushing them down the toilet. The drop off points will operate from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. A list of drop off sites are available on the state health department's website http://www.adph.org.
