Protestors demand resignations from Selma City Schools board

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

Protestors in Dallas County are calling for multiple resignations from the Selma City School Board.

Protestors demanding the superintendent and three board members step down. The protest was held in front of the Selma City Schools district office.

The call for their resignations came two days after the Alabama Department of Education released a detailed report into alleged misconduct at Selma High School.

The six-page report outlined charges of one teacher having sexual relations with two students, a teacher requiring students to perform provocative dance routines and allegations of grades being changed to increase AYP scores.

One protestor held up a sign that read "take out the trash."

"Because the people caused the trash and they need to be removed," one protester said.

Superintendent Gerald Shirley has declined to say anything publicly. The Department of Education tells WSFA 12 News it appears the school district is serious about making corrections based on previous meetings and phone calls. The state has given the front office 21 business days to come up with a response and plan to outline those solutions.

Some, however, believe change for the better should start now and at the top beginning with Shirley's resignation.

"Well, I'm not taking anything away from the department but we the people need to be satisfied, too," protester Dee Henderson said.

Henderson and her fellow protestors say school board members Frank Chestnut, Brenda Obomanu and Dr. Kirit Chapatwala should quit.

The protestors say this isn't just a one day deal. They plan to be back Monday morning to make their point all over again.
