SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Fear has taken over the Colbert Square Apartments in Sheffield, where a woman was brutally raped and robbed Tuesday night. Her attacker is still on the loose, leaving residents worried and on guard.

"Everyone has been inside. No one has been outside. It's sad she can't even come back to her own home because of this," said neighbor Kelly Roberts.

Police said the man knocked on several doors before he finally forced his way into the victim's apartment. We spoke to a woman whose door the man knocked on first.

She wants to remain anonymous for obvious reasons.

"He told me to open up, it's important. I told him to go away before I call the cops," she said.

She thought the knock on her door was odd, but not alarming. Minutes later, another person was at her door. This time, it was a woman screaming she had been raped.

"The expression on her face was terrifying and shaken. I have to live with that face and the way she was looking for the rest of my life," the neighbor said.

Police said the victim's attacker attempted to clean up the scene, and then he forced the woman to go outside naked. He stole her cell phone and car and then took off. Investigators found the woman's car abandoned in the middle of the road.

"She is old enough to be my mother. That is just wrong. It's wrong either way; it's sad," said the anonymous neighbor.

The brutality of the crime has female residents and families particularly concerned for their safety. But for the woman who was almost a victim, it's just too much for her to handle. She said she is preparing to leave the complex.

The suspect is described as a black male with short black hair in waves, mid-to-late 20s, approximately 5'9 to 5'10. Police said he should have a cut on his head where the victim hit him in the head with a glass ashtray.

If you have any information about the man responsible, you are asked to contact Sheffield Police immediately.
