SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Police in Sheffield are asking for help from the public in finding a rapist.

It happened at the Colbert Square Apartments around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators said a man knocked on a woman's door and said he was looking for someone before forcing his way inside.

A struggle ensued before the man assaulted and raped the victim. Investigators said the man tried to clean the scene, and then took the naked victim inside to point out her car. The man then stole the woman's car, leaving her outside. Police found the car a few blocks away in the middle of the road.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and then released.

The suspect is described as a black male with short black hair in waves, mid-to-late 20s, approximately 5'9 to 5'10. Police said he should have a cut on his head where the victim hit him in the head with a glass ashtray.

Investigators said they did not know each other, and police are concerned he may strike again.

"The suspect in this case went to two other apartments prior to the third apartment with the same sad story, trying to get into an apartment. There's no doubt he was looking for a victim and he found one," said Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray.

If you have any information about the man responsible, you are asked to contact Sheffield Police immediately.
