HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A man is in the hospital after he tried to hang himself during a standoff with police at a home on Oakwood Avenue Tuesday night.

Police were called out to the home on reports of a domestic dispute. A woman said her husband assaulted her and their young child. She left the home and called police.

When police arrived, they found 26-year-old Keith Garrison armed with a knife inside the home. They could see him through a front window that was busted out during the dispute. He had barricaded himself inside the home.

Officers described Garrison as distraught and uncooperative. They say he was yelling for them to shoot him.

Police tried to talk with Garrison, but he remained uncooperative. They soon lost contact with him. As they were working to break down the front door, an officer was able to see through a window that Garrison hanged himself.

Officers entered the home and got him down. They say Garrison was still breathing. He was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Police believe he will survive.

Police say Garrison will be arrested and charged with domestic violence and assault when he is released from the hospital.
