BESE committee discusses common core standards

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A meeting Tuesday to discuss the controversial common core curriculum went into the night.

Board member Lottie Beebe added an item to the agenda of the Academic Goals and Instructional Improvement Committee to discuss what would happen if the transition to the new curriculum was stopped.

Parents and teachers got a chance to address board members, some saying the new curriculum is unfair and brings home excessive homework.

"To accept change - simply by believing in an unproven concept; I'm from Louisiana, in our culture you have to prove to me something works before I buy it," said another speaker.

Others say it puts students on equal levels to learn.

"I do support state standards," said one teacher.  "I have notice that my children, my students, are better problem solvers, better collaborators."

Some teachers take issue with the new standards, saying they were not properly prepared for what's now expected of them.
