BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A man accused of taking a car and cell phone without permission from a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease has been arrested.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said Charles Contois, known as Remi, 37, was taken into custody Monday afternoon.

Deputies said he took the victim's Mercedes-Benz and cell phone on September 29 while the victim was asleep.

According to reports, the victim's power of attorney is Contois' cousin and told deputies that Contois was told multiple times not to visit the victim's home, but he continued to do so.

Investigators said the day of the theft, the victim's power of attorney called Contois and asked him to bring back the car and phone, but he did not.

Authorities reported there are several reports on file similar to this one and deputies who work the area know of the victim's condition.

Contois was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the following charges:

Exploitation of the infirm (felony)

Unauthorized use of motor vehicle (felony)

Theft (misdemeanor)

EBRSO added Contois had been arrested earlier that month for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
