BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The LSU women's basketball team, coming off its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since 2008, was picked to finish third in the 2014 Southeastern Conference preseason media poll that was released on Monday.
Tennessee tops the order of finish with 192 points with Kentucky (185), LSU (156), Texas A&M (144), Vanderbilt (134), Georgia (132) and South Carolina (131) rounding out the top half of the league. Auburn (84), Missouri (74), Florida (67), Mississippi State (66), Arkansas (57), Ole Miss (2) and Alabama (18) round out the bottom half.
LSU senior forward Theresa Plaisance, the SEC's leading returning scorer, finished second in voting for SEC Preseason Player of the Year with three votes. Tennessee's Meighan Simmons garnered 10 votes for SEC Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Joining Simmons and Plaisance on the All-SEC first team were DeNesha Stallworth, Kentucky; Bashaara Graves, Tennessee and Jasmine Lister, Vanderbilt.
The Lady Tigers compiled a 10-6 mark in conference play last season to finish sixth in the league before going on their NCAA Tournament run. LSU has posted double-digit SEC victories in both head coach Nikki Caldwell's previous two seasons with the program.
Points were compiled on a 14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. Each media member also voted for a five-player All-SEC Team and the Preseason SEC Player of the Year.
The 2013-14 SEC Media Preseason Poll tips off SEC Basketball Media Days, October 16-17 at The Westin Birmingham. LSU takes its turn at media day on Wednesday. The SEC Women's Basketball Coaches Poll will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Season tickets for the 2013-14 Lady Tiger season are now on sale at www.LSUtix.net. LSU hosts Tennessee Temple in its first exhibition game at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30.
