Clarksville officer shoots truck, home while killing coyote

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police shot and killed an ill coyote in a quiet Clarksville neighborhood, but that isn't what has some neighbors upset.

The call came in that a coyote was acting crazy, wandering through the Bruceton subdivision near Tiny Town Road. Clarksville police showed up quickly and found the coyote, and what happened next is under investigation.

"They noticed that it was foaming at the mouth and had an odd color in the eyes," said Clarksville police spokeswoman Officer Natalie Hall

An officer shot the coyote with a shotgun, killing it. But some of the shot also apparently struck a nearby truck and the window of nearby home, where a woman was asleep inside.

Some neighbors felt that the police officer was reckless and that situation was not a life-or-death emergency.

"I think she should be disciplined, because if that would have hit their daughter, it would have been a whole different story," said neighbor Sierra Booth.

Clarksville police say they will review the shooting to see if proper procedure was followed. For now, they believe putting down the coyote quickly was the right call.

"It was a coyote, and they thought it may have had distemper. And if it ran through the neighborhood with that type of illness, not only could it make the other animals sick, but it could cause havoc for the community," Hall said.
