HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Schoolchildren may escape one painful effect of the shutdown: school lunches will not be cut off after all, putting an end to two weeks of uncertainty as to how the situation would be handled.

School leaders knew funds would be available to get them through the month of October, but they were not sure if appropriations would be approved past the end of the month.

The USDA sent out guidelines for school lunches, saying that funds should be safe for the rest of the fiscal year. School districts in North Alabama rely heavily on federal funds to keep the child nutrition program going. Districts were initially allotted funds to get them through October, but if funds were not going to be readily available, many of the districts would have had to pull from reserve funds.

Decatur, Madison County, Madison City and Huntsville City Schools are presently operating with at least three months in their reserves.
