Albertville leaders to discuss unsightly signage

The city of Albertville is expected to discuss a sign ordinance at their work session Monday evening.

Councilman Nathan Broadhurst said there are signs littering the town, predominantly on Highway 431, which are problematic.  He said there are signs that are half torn down, some in disrepair, unsightly portable signs, as well as multiple signs for a single business.

Broadhurst said currently, the city has no way to regulate signs because they do not have an ordinance.  The proposal would include requiring businesses to get permits to have signs outside their business.

"Obviously the city encourages our businesses to be active and do well, so we wanted to make sure it wasn't something that would inhibit that, but it would encourage everybody to keep the appearance of their businesses welcoming and attractive," he said.

Broadhurst said current signs in good condition would be grandfathered in, but the ordinance would allow for enforcement of current signs that are not in good condition.

A formal vote on the ordinance could come at their next city council meeting on October 21.
