Few choices available for Alabama health insurance

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you buy your own insurance, a recent letter canceling your current plan may have given you sticker shock. The majority of current plans don't meet the Affordable Care Act requirements and the new plans that do will cost you a lot more that what you are used to paying.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama encourages Alabamians to shop around, however there aren't many options. In fact, Alabama has the fewest plan options among the 36 states with federally run marketplaces according to the U.S. Department of health and Human Resources.

In Alabama you can choose between seven different plans, depending on where you live. Compare that to surround states like Georgia that has 50 to choose from and Tennessee residents who have about 60.

Blue Cross Blue Shield and Humana are the only two companies available in Alabama. United Healthcare opted out.

One tool available is the Kaiser Family Foundation calculator available online. You select your state, income and number of family members and it tells you if you qualify for subsidies that could make your premium lower.

Representative Laura Hall is opening her door for questions, comments and concerns. She will host a town hall meeting Oct. 22 at the Richard Showers Center from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be healthcare experts and doctors there to answer questions and help with decision making. You will be able to sign up for an insurance plan at the event.
