ELKMONT, AL (WAFF) - Deputies responded to a home on George Lane in Elkmont after a man stabbed his nephew around 6 p.m. Sunday.
Medflight was called to the scene and the victim was flown to Huntsville Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
At a second scene a short distance from the first scene on George Lane, the suspect ditched his truck. K-9 units and helicopter crews searched for the suspect.
The stabbing was the result of an escalation in a fight between a husband and wife. Wonda Roberts said her husband, James Roberts, had been drinking all day at a nearby trailer. When he came home, an argument broke out.
That's when Roberts said her nephew, Rodney Swearengin, came to her rescue. She said the two men began fighting and her husband pulled out a knife and stabbed Swearengin. Swearengin was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
Roberts said her husband fled the scene. Deputies found his truck abandoned about a mile away on Pinedale Road.
Sheriff Mike Blakely said Roberts was apprehended Tuesday afternoon after someone saw him about a mile from the scene of the incident.
