To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Lauderdale County could soon have to find a new shelter to send their animals. Volunteers at the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter say the county is not helping them financially, hurting their daily operations. They want the county to pay up or send their animals elsewhere.

Volunteers have started a petition asking the Lauderdale County Commission to pay at least half of the shelter's operating costs.

They say it's not fair for the city to fund more than they have to, if most of the animals come from the county.

Debbie Raphune and other volunteers work around the clock to keep the facility a low-kill shelter.

"I don't think the people of the county realize this has been going on for all these years and no one has stepped up to say this is not right," said Raphune. "The county needs to step up and take responsibility for the animals that come in here. If the county animals weren't here we would be a no kill shelter immediately."

But other volunteers know that operating a shelter costs money, money they say they're not getting from the county.

For years, the city facility has had a contract with the county to take in the county's animals, but now volunteers are asking the county to step up and pay for at least 50 percent of the operating costs since more than half of the animals taken in are from the county.

"I've tried to contact the county commission about the petition, but I haven't  been unable to reach them. We're not asking for anything over the top, we're asking for them to be fair."

The county commission hasn't responded to questions about the petition.
