FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A plan to close the Handy Head Start program in Florence was temporarily diverted Friday. The federally funded early education program lost money as a result of the government shutdown.

According to Florence City School Superintendent Dr. Janet Womack, the school district relinquished their grants and created a partnership with a community action program to keep funding for the Handy Head Start program through the end of the month.

The school will now be able use money donated to the National Head Start Association from a couple in Texas. Earlier in the week, $10 million was donated to the nationwide program by Laura and John Arnold, after the couple learned the shutdown impacted more than 7,000 children.
