Businesses in the Rocket City are beginning to feel the far-reaching effects of the partial government shutdown.

Reflections Style and Cuts barbershop on Patton Road is already feeling the pinch. The shop has been in business for nearly two decades. It sits directly outside Gate 10 of Redstone Arsenal.

"We are right next to the gate. We usually get all of those guys coming in. It's just not the same anymore," said barber, Erik Freeman.

On a day like today, these barbers say the shop would be much busier, but with so many of their customers currently furloughed, people just aren't coming in as often.

Between all the barber shop talk, it's clear the morale is down among many government workers.

"Everybody was happy and now everybody is kind of down. Nobody knows what is going on and when they are going to go back to work," said owner, Jay Thomas.

We talked with a furloughed federal employee while he was in the barber's chair. He says the furlough is not stopping him from doing things like getting a haircut, but if this goes on for longer, that could certainly change.

"It hurts. I'll put it like that. You can feel the pinch. There is no question about that. You feel the pinch and you just have to get by," said Wilmer Marshall.

The decline in business is concerning for employees of the barbershop.

"We're not going to get the same amount of money as we are used to getting because people are not coming in as much. It's definitely going to take a toll on us," explained Freeman.

However, the owner does not think the shutdown will have any long-term effects on the shop.

"Regardless of what's going on, you are going to get your haircut," said Thomas.
