Trial over Ala. Accountability Act set for March

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Legislature will be halfway through its 2014 session when a judge holds a trial over one of the major laws enacted in the 2013 session.

Montgomery County Circuit Judge Gene Reese has scheduled a trial starting March 17 on a lawsuit filed by the Alabama Education Association to challenge the Alabama Accountability Act. The Legislature passed the law in February to provide tax credits to parents who move their children from failing public schools to private schools participating in the program.

The Legislature starts its 2014 session in January and will end in April.

A spokesman for the Institute for Justice in Alexandria, Va., says it plans to intervene in the case on behalf of parents who are using school choice for their children.
