Your Week in Pop Culture: Atlanta sports fans - the most misunderstood, miserable fans on earth

Being a sports fan is never easy - compound that with being an Atlanta sports fan and well, it's a completely different side of agony and ecstasy. (RNN) – This week, like any other week of the year, is a miserable time to be a supporter of Atlanta's professional sports teams.

I am one such miserable Georgian. On Monday night, a mixture of anger and frustration swept over me all at once as the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons lost big in prime time.

No matter the circumstances, it's the underachieving that's become so common place. When they do win, it makes loyal Atlanta sports fans look like bandwagon jumpers; when they lose, the old motto of "maybe next year" escapes our lips. We say it so much that we don't even believe it anymore.

The losing despite winning has become common place: no professional or collegiate team in the state of Georgia has won anything significant since 1995 (Braves won the World Series, and if you want to count the 2005 SEC Championship for UGA, go ahead, people are still talking about 1980).

Here is where we're misunderstood – we love our teams, we want to win like fans of the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, or even New York Yankees want to win – we expect them to win because they are our team. We get slammed for supporting our home teams, and when they win our fandom is questioned. You know who should be questioned: people who have lived in the south their entire lives and are diehard New England Patriots fans, never traveling anywhere north of Nashville.

It takes a special quality to love a team who constantly falls short (see: Chicago Cubs fans).

Atlanta sports fans get a bad rap because we have become numb to the pain of losing and want nothing more than a championship. When we get close and fall short, so many Twitter sports analysts (a special group of know-it-alls) mock us. We rise up and tomahawk chop forward to victory no matter how the season goes. We wish we could say that Phillips Arena is a true highlight factory (the Atlanta Dream are WNBA contenders), but when you trade away the best players and go through head coaches, you have to start wondering what the problem is (looking at you general managers and ownership).

My head and heart want to explode every year, but with every new season, a rebirth of hope bursts from my little sports-loving heart. It's the circle of a Georgia sports fan's life, and it's one I live with pride. At least I am not writing to my congressman about my heartache.

Mumford and Sons/Miley mashup makes ‘Wrecking Ball' pleasant

With her latest album Bangerz released on Tuesday, the oversaturation of Miley Cyrus is in full effect.

Her second single from the newly released album, Wrecking Ball, has gotten more than 200 million views on YouTube and been turned into a million different memes and GIFs because of Cyrus' nudity. Despite the circus, Wrecking Ball is actually a beautiful pop song. I wish someone like Kelly Clarkson or Jennifer Hudson was singing it, but I digress.

YouTube user "isosine" created a beautiful mashup of Wrecking Ball and Mumford and Sons' Little Lion Man and make the hit so smoothly beautiful, that Little Wrecking Ball would kill on the radio. It even makes the video visually better.

Jam of the week: Trombone Shorty, Fire and Brimstone – As a former marching band geek, I can dig a soulful instrumentalist who can sing and play an instrument. As seen here, Trombone Shorty understands my needs from a performer.

'Gravity' the box office leader of the year – so far

The space thriller Gravity won this weekend at the box office, setting the October record for biggest opening weekend in the U.S. and grossing more than $100 million mark worldwide, according to Variety.

I imagine its place at No. 1 at the box office feels much like seeing Earth from outer space: a beautiful view from the top.

Here's last weekend's top five, according to Box Office Mojo (listed next to previous week's ranking and weekend gross):

1. Gravity (NR) $55,785,112

2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (1) $20,950,192

3. Runner Runner (NR) $7,706,712

4. Prisoners (2) $5,748,464

5. Rush (3) $4,477,525

In theatres: Oct. 11

Captain Phillips – Based on the true story of the cargo ship captained by Capt. Richard Phillips and hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009 – the first American ship that had fallen victim to piracy in more than 200 years. The film stars Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi and Barjhad Abdirahman.

Machete Kills – The sequel to the 2010 film Machete picks up where things left off. Super assassin Machete (Danny Trejo) isn't dead, and has been called upon by the president of the United States - played by Charlie Sheen (no, not Martin Sheen. Yes, that's right, a movie exists where Charlie Sheen is the president of something besides #winning) - to stop a super villain played by Mel Gibson (perhaps too natural of a casting choice here).

If the comedy of the casting doesn't make you want to go see it, I am not sure there is anything I can do. The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Alba, the acting debut of Lady Gaga and is directed by Robert Rodriguez. Again, the casting.

Romeo and Juliet – The latest theatrical version of the classic William Shakespeare play, still based on the "star-crossed lovers" of feuding families in Verona. High school students will love it because they can go to the movies instead of reading it for English classes. I love it because Damian Lewis is in it.

Also in theatres: Escape from Tomorrow, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, CBGB.

Jimmy Fallon, Paul McCartney switch accents in walk-in incident

Jimmy Fallon has the best skits on television. The skits are so good, he can get any guest to join in the fun.

The latest installment of the Late Night hosts' creativity came on Monday when musical legend Paul McCartney appeared as a guest.

This is what happens when you are consumed in your phone and you walk into a rock and roll legend – a rock and roll legend with a really bad American accent.

A little something from YouTube: Headless man prank scares park goers

Just when you think it was safe to go to the park because of nice weather, one magician scares the bejeezus out of families and teenagers in outrageous prank.

Although one guy was too busy on his cell phone to be amused or frightened by the prank, which is performed by YouTube user and creator of the hilarious drive-thru pranks Magic of Rahat.

There are three more weeks until Halloween. Keep your eyes open.
