JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Jackson County mom plans to take her fight for school safety to the county commission. She hopes county leaders will agree to fund school resource officers.

Currently, the Jackson County School System does not have any school resource officers.

Teresa Walker is collecting letters from the principal at North Jackson High School as well as from principals across the Jackson County School System in the hopes of convincing the county commission to find funding to staff school resource officers in the system.

Walker has a child that attends school at North Jackson and is concerned about her safety. After watching the news where more SRO's were being added in Marshall and DeKalb Counties, Walker questions why Jackson County doesn't have any.

"We can't guarantee the children will be safe 100 percent, but we still have to do what we have to do to make sure they're able to get an education and come to school not feeling scared and feel threatened and I just feel the presence of an SRO officer would certainly help that," said Walker.

Commission Chairman Matthew Hodges said the commission just passed a budget that's nearly a million dollars in the red. However, Hodges said he welcomes any ideas they could pursue to help make this happen.
