EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) -

An east Alabama company will be handing out pink slips to hundreds of workers soon.

Eufaula City leaders say 300 jobs will be leaving the state and the country. Cooper Lighting will be moving operations out of the country to Mexico.

Eufaula Mayor Jack Tibbs says the city made a plea to Cooper Lighting to stay in Barbour Co., but those efforts fell short.

"The thing that makes this a really tough deal is this plant in Eufaula was very profitable. It was a home to $52 million a year with a 30 percent margin and most businesses would be very happy with that," says Tibbs.

He also says labor costs in Mexico is why the company wants to move.

Employees will be laid off between now and May 2014.
