Government shutdown closes metro Atlanta Head Start programs

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

More than 2,800 children in north Georgia are staying home from school because of the federal government shutdown, and there's no indication of when they'll be able to return to class.

According to Ninth District Opportunity, Inc., all of its113 Head Start programs in the northern Georgia district are closed effective Oct. 7 until further notice. Also, 27 Pre-K classrooms are closed.

The following Pre-K centers will remain open:

  • Carnesville Pre-K
  • Hall County Pre-K classrooms located in Hall County school buildings
  • Forsyth County Pre-K classrooms located in the Forsyth elementary schools
  • Cherokee County Pre-K
  • Monarch Pre-K

The Allgood Head Start program is one of the affected sites. A note on the front door explains that the temporary closure is due to the federal government shutdown. A message on the facility's answering machine also explains the situation.

Around the corner at Kids Palace Learning Academy, a daycare center, director Yolanda Killens is accepting some of the children whose working parents have nowhere else to send their children.

"I had one parent, she was affected this morning. She was running late. I guess she didn't watch the news and she didn't know that they were closed this morning," said Killens. "She says, 'I'm running late. Can you take my son all day?' And I said, 'Sure we have the room today.'"

Killens said she can't guarantee she'll have room every day. She also worries about families who don't have room in their budgets for childcare. Head Start is a free program for those who are accepted.
