Birthday bash for Joseph E. Lowery goes on despite wife's death

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Iconic civil rights leader Joseph E. Lowery turned 92 on Sunday, and a star-studded bash in his honor went on despite the fact that his wife of 63 years, Evelyn, passed away just 10 days before.

Attendees wore black, and the celebration went on at the same chapel at Morehouse College where Evelyn Lowery was memorialized.

Cheryl Lowery-Osborne, Joseph Lowery's daughter, said the family decided to go through with the celebration because that's what Evelyn Lowery would have wanted.

"We carry on because that's what mama raised us to do," Lowery-Osborne said. "She spent the last six hours of her life planning [the celebration]."

Comedian Chris Tucker hosted the event, which also honored filmmaker Tyler Perry for his work.

"I always knew that my message would be from the screen," Perry told Joseph Lowery as he accepted the award.

The icing on Joseph Lowery's cake? Jamie Foxx, along with Joseph Lowery's family and guests of honor, all sang him happy birthday.

Tucker said despite mourning the loss of Joseph Lowery's wife, he wanted to make sure the birthday boy had some laughs.

"Oh, we're gonna make him - he gonna laugh tonight!" Tucker said. "We're going to have a good time because it's a celebration of his life and his wife's life, because they've lived such great lives."

Joseph Lowery told CBS Atlanta he was doing fine "considering everything I've been through."
