The call is going out for people with old or unwanted prescription medication cluttering up their cabinets. The Huntsville Police Department wants to help take them off your hands in a safe way.

The department is hosting a drug take-back event Saturday, Oct. 12. Anyone can drop off their unused, unlabeled medications from 9 a.m. to noon at the Huntsville Jaycees Building, Flint River Baptist Church in Hazel Green, and Madison City Hall.

"This is an anonymous program, you can drive up and get prescription drugs off your shelves, disposed of properly," said Dr. Harry Hobbs with HPD.

Dr. Hobbs said that in addition to prescription drug abuse being a growing problem, there are environmental reasons for the program. Over time, medications flushed or dumped down drains can affect the quality of the local water system and impact animal and plant life.

The program is presented in conjunction with the Partnership for a Drug-Free Community.
